My students need a Chromebook, potting mix, ink cartridges, watercolor paper, and brushes to learn common skills that can be applied between all STEM and arts content areas.
My students learn in different ways, so it is important that I provide opportunities for students to learn across disciplines. Arts integration is a powerful tool for my students' learning because it allows them to create, communicate, collaborate, and become critical thinkers as they solve problems.
My wonderful students come from a wide variety of cultural, social, and economic backgrounds, but they all have at least one thing in common: they learn best by collaborating and exploring through hands-on activities.
My Project
My project enhances and deepens my students' understanding of STEM concepts by providing a variety of learning modes through art integration. For example, they use the chromebook to collaborate and design a vegetable garden. Then they use potting mix to plant vegetable seeds and seedlings in the school planters. As the garden grows, they use the chromebook to create and edit videos or print their own photographs with the ink cartridges to show the germination process. Throughout the learning process, the chromebook enables them to record original songs or plays to demonstrate their understanding of STEM concepts. In addition, they use the watercolor paper and brushes to create detailed illustrations or prints that show their understanding of ecosystems and plant physiology. Students will be empowered and inspired by these creative, meaningful learning experiences.
Through this project, students experience how arts integration enhances their understanding of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math concepts.
