Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are interested in learning about their world. Their favorite activities include literacy stations and exploration centers. Students can be scientists and explorers with the right tools. I want to foster an interest in design and problem solving.

Our school is a Title One community school.

We have a lot of ELL students. Although our kids are poor, they are mostly well loved and looking at education as a way out of the cycle of poverty. My class is a bright mix of curious kids this year all eager to learn and more importantly, to get along and think. They love being scientists! They have many questions to ask. The opportunity to explore the answers to those questions and record them in their science journals would make learning come alive for their bright, curious minds. I want to cement this learning style into my classroom. Ask! Explore! Experiment! Reflect on what you've learned. I want to pique their interest in the world around them and give them a belief in themselves, that they can ask questions and find out answers.

My Project

These science exploration centers will integrate our literacy and science. The engineering kit is open ended so students will be able to design, improve and redesign all year long. The fairy tale kits will help them work together to solve problems. The ability to design and to use something other than a text book and a piece of paper, will motivate them to think and explore.

This project will make a difference for twenty-two bright learners.

These are kids who don't have a lot at home. At school is where they learn to work together. At school is where they are challenged to think beyond the parameters of their small inner-city neighborhood. These STEM/literacy materials will give students an opportunity for hands-on problem solving.
