Each year I'm blessed with, who I consider to be, the very best and hardest working students. Each of them struggle in an academic area, in some way, also including behavior and social emotional weakness. Covid-19 made it so that our students, who also struggle with social skills, were no longer able to interact closely or learn how to be a team. Due to limited interaction, they couldn't learn to share resources or learn together through hands on exploration.
As this new school year opened, we introduced science and stem to the students, we have found they have a deep desire to engage in school in a different way and we've discovered some hidden strengths that have trickled into the other academics they are engaged in at school.
Thanks to science and stem, they are excited once again, to come to school. The parents are excited to see their students learning and have shared how they cannot wait to learn their new lesson!
I would like to continue to use stem to encourage reading, asking and answering questions, continue learning how to work cooperatively together to solve problems and learning with a hands on approach. In order to do this work, we need to keep building our Stem library with the mentor texts to use with our lessons. We also have some very wiggly students who cannot participate while sitting in a regular chair, especially when they're excited. Wobble stools will allow them to participate while wiggling in a much safer way.
