STEM and Gardening

My Students

I am fortunate to be able to work in a school full of passionate educators and amazing students. My school is in the high desert mountains outside of Albuquerque. I work at a STEM school which focuses on Environmental Sciences. My students are passionate about STEM and being Makers.

I feel privileged to work in a beautiful wilderness area and to work with engaged and hard-working students.

My school is special because we all care about and look out for each other. It is truly a fabulous community.

My Project

My school is a STEM Magnet elementary. We focus on Environmental Science. Each teacher at the school works to ensure there are 6 hours of STEM integration a week and at least 3 Project Based Learning units a year. This allows for lots of access to hands-on learning and real-world connections.

With the requested garden irrigation items, our students would have the ability to easily grow plants in our two large gardens and learn about water conservation.

This would create a great opportunity for students to be outdoors, learn about plant growth and needs, and have discussions about water scarcity.

Our school has been virtual for the majority of the year but has recently returned to all in-person learning, with an exception of some who remain at home for virtual. With the students back on campus, we are able to use the garden to get students outside and into experiential learning again. The garden work also can be a catalyst for community connection and food support.
