STEM and 3D Printing through the Lyda Hill Innovation Challenge!
Help me give my students a 3D printer and printing materials so they can learn about STEM.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Barlow's classroom raised $357

My Students
Our Elementary is suburban with mixed demographics. Approximately 40% of students are low-income families. Many students live in apartments, or in single parent homes and blended families. Two of the students have a parent in prison, and two have a deceased parent. The average test scores for science and math are only 60%. Low-test score concerns have caused a big push to increase student interest in STEM activities, which will encourage better grades in science and math.
I want to be sponsored by the Lyda Hill Inovation Challenge in order introduce my students to wonderful world of STEM, and STEM careers with 3-D printers.
I started a STEM Club at my school, but Covid has stopped after school meetings. I plan to incorporate STEM instruction into my weekly class lessons instead. A 3-D printer will allow me to demonstrate all of the amazing futuristic technology available through STEM careers, and open up the dialogue for women in the field of STEM.
We have a hybrid schedule where students only come to school four days per week. The students benefit from hands on STEM materials. Your donation will help promote STEM education in our school. Thank you for helping
My Project
Our Elementary school is suburban with mixed demographics. In the 6th grade alone, 40% of students are low-income families. Many live in apartments, or in single parent homes or in blended families. Six of the students have a parent in prison, and five have a deceased parent. The average test scores for science and math are only 60%. Low-test score concerns have caused a big push to increase student interest in STEM activities, especially among Minorities and Females.
I am inspired by a grant submitted by "Mrs. Boyd in Dallas, Texas, "3D Printer Needed for Community Service Project ".
I will demonstrate the critical need for Women and Minorities to fill STEM jobs! I plan to do this by introducing kids to STEM through 3-D printing! My school does science and math rotations, so the entire 6th grade will get to participate in these lessons. I will utilize the" If/Then Demystifying 3-D Printing" video, as well as the "Mission Unstoppable If/Then 3-D Statue Exhibit" video. A 3-D printer will allow me to demonstrate all of the amazing futuristic technology available through STEM careers, and open up the dialogue about the lack of Women and Minorities in this field. Students need to see first-hand all of the applications available to them through 3D printing, such as building houses, making clothing, creating future medical devices, and many more.
Due to Covid, students only come to school four days per week this year, which has created large gaps in instructional time. The students are engaged so much better when they have hands-on STEM materials to increase focus and interest. Your donation will benefit all of the 6th grade students at my school while promoting STEM education, and promoting interest in Math and Science careers for the future.
