Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work at a Title I Middle school, located in South-East San Diego. Most of the kids don't have access to many things we take for granted, both in and out of the classroom. One hundred percent of students at our school receive free breakfast and lunch, and nearly forty-three percent are English Learners.

I teach in a special education classroom with students that have moderate to severe disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, physical disabilities, and autism.

Their disabilities inhibit them from full inclusion into the community, affect the way they interact with others, and impact their ability to live independently.

The daily functional curriculum in my classroom focuses on basic reading, writing, math, communication, social, and independent living skills. This helps the students to learn the basic skills that they will need to become independent adults.

My Project

These STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities will be used in my Special Education classroom for hands-on learning and fun. These activities help promote critical thinking skills. My students will be excited to use these manipulatives after finishing their math and science assignments. They look at it as a reward; little do they know that they are learning so many new skills. These materials such as boxes, Tinertoys, IQ Builder, Plus-Plus, Creative Kids Flakes, etc. will also help those students who need hands-on learning and sensory learning to progress towards their goals. Lastly, this allows students to think about creativity and work and communicate together to create their own pieces of art.
