My Project
Growing butterflies offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to teach STEM, language, and literacy skills to ELL students. By observing the butterfly life cycle, students engage with scientific concepts like metamorphosis and biological processes, enhancing their understanding of science and math. They also develop important language skills as they learn new vocabulary related to biology, such as "metamorphosis," "caterpillar," and "chrysalis," while documenting their observations through writing. This practice improves their writing skills, sentence structure, and grammar.
Additionally, discussing the butterfly’s growth with peers fosters speaking and listening practice, while reading about butterflies supports comprehension and vocabulary development.
Activities like journaling, labeling diagrams, and group discussions offer opportunities for students to integrate language learning into STEM subjects, fostering critical thinking and academic language use in an engaging, cross-disciplinary way. This process is culturally inclusive, as it taps into universal experiences, helping ELL students feel connected to the material and their classmates. Furthermore, a Teachers Pay Teachers gift card will allow me to purchase additional worksheets and resources related to the butterfly unit, enhancing the learning experience and providing more opportunities for students to practice and reinforce their skills.
