STEM Activites for Kindergarteners

My students need STEM activities and resources to enrich and expand our lessons in these areas.

My Students

I have 25 kindergarten students at a large inner city school district in Warren, Ohio. Predominately the students in my classroom come from a low socio-economic background. This is exemplified in that all my students receive free breakfast and free lunch.

I have an inclusion classroom with 3 students on speech IEPs and 3 students on academic IEPs including one with Autism.

The students are all very excited about learning, especially with hands-on activities. They love coming to school. We have an extensive literacy program, but are in need of some resources involving STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math).

My Project

My students are very hands-on and love to explore. I would like to open up a STEM discovery center where students would have an opportunity to learn by exploring within the areas of science, technology, engineering, and math in a small group setting. This would take place every day during managed independent learning or centers. I would rotate the requested STEM activities throughout our course of study, so that the students would get to experience a variety of lessons and activities covering a wide range of topics and standards. I would take time to introduce each activity whole group and teach the science lessons behind it, so that the students could explore at the discovery center with confidence.
