This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My eighth grade students are enrolled at a School for Civics in the Community that is also classified as a Tier I school within the New York City Public School system. My classroom is composed of students from around the globe who are enthusiastic to learn, grow, and discover. All of my students are classified as English Language Learners and are currently at different levels in their language acquisition.
My students are brilliant, driven, and highly motivated children who have recently immigrated to the United States.
They have left everything behind in their home countries in hopes of better opportunities. My goal as the English language teacher is to build a strong foundation in language in order to foster a love of learning and reading. Many of my students are from Central and South America with Spanish being their home language. My ENL students need access to a school library that is inclusive and at their current reading level. With access to bilingual books and guided reading books, my students will have the opportunity to learn English and become successful learners.
My Project
The Scholastic Guided Reading Books and Bilingual Books will make a life changing difference in my students' learning by providing the opportunity to learn the English language in an engaging and meaningful way. These books will enhance student learning by exposing them to new sight words, new vocabulary, and sentence structures. As their language teacher I will also see their progress from beginning to end.
These guided reading books will encourage my students to choose from a variety of grade appropriate texts that will prompt them to read independently at their grade level.
I want my students to feel confident and engaged when reading.
