Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

We reach students with real music experiences. We teach with an experience first and define the experience second mentally. Our 4th and 5th grade students all learn to play guitar chords and create their own music. Our school is a title one school with over 90% of students qualifying for the free lunch program. Over 70% of our students' families are from Puerto Rico and Cuba.

Last year we had some 5th grade students write their own songs and learn to play them on guitar. They progressed very quickly and we were able to meet with this small group of outstanding students for an additional music teaching session. We focused on a rock band setting and students chose an instrument to focus on. This group performed in our community and was featured in our districts "Fine Arts Festival".

Our goal for this coming school year is to create at least four of these small ensembles. The acoustic electric guitar is a major component in the ensemble and we currently don't have one.

The acoustic electric guitar will be used every day in our music classroom. Students will get an opportunity to feel how steel strings are different from the nylon that they practice on, and how different the sound is. The musical experiences and band will be complete due to your efforts.
