For far too long in education, we’ve been working with the presumption of teaching to ensure our students get a “good job”. But what does that look like? Today we are preparing students for jobs that don’t even exist. I believe the best way to prepare our students is through Steam Education. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking. My students will be in my lab learning to push their minds out of the box and create new innovative ways to solve real world problems.
Students at my school are excited and eager to start this new way of learn.
I am the Steam Engineering for K-5 students in an impoverished school. I teach all types of students from Magnet to at risk. Steam will be a new class for all students at our school this year, so I have to build from the ground up. All the students are very excited to create and experience new things
My Project
STEAM challenges students for most important and foundational principles to lie in inquiry, critical thinking, and process-based learning to solve problems, while also encouraging them to be creative in the solutions they come up with.
When students engage in activities that combine different elements of STEAM, they experience guided inquiry in which they must ask thoughtful questions, discover answers, apply what they learn, and problem-solve creatively.
Students learning how to make a wire sculpture that lights up must ask questions about how it works, try out different wiring techniques to get the sculpture to light up, think about the meaning behind their artistic creation, and experience the creative process, going from a design on paper to a tangible, functional object.
