This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have to overcome many obstacles in order to get their education. Most come from homes afflicted by poverty and family breakdowns. They need to have their vision broadened and their imaginations engaged.

We have an urban school in one of the poorest neighborhoods in our city.

Over 95% of our students qualify for free and reduced price lunches. 60% of our students are African-American, 27% are Hispanic, and the rest other ethnic groups. Our students lack some of the basic educational skills including reading at grade level.

My Project

These books will engage my students in reading and literature. Steampunk novels like the "Girl Genius" series provide students exciting adventures where characters, not unlike them, overcome obstacles to realize their dreams. One of the best features of the Girl Genius series is that a young woman uses science and technology to overcome complex situations. I hope that the girls who get involved in our reading club take her as a model for their own future.

These novels provide my students with gateways into further learning.

I hope that by reading these stories my students will be enticed into reading H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Issac Asimov, and Carl Sagan. The adventures that Agatha has will open up to them the beginnings of their own adventures.
