This little crew is always ready and willing to go above and beyond, no matter what the task. They love to have fun, but they also love to learn. That is what I love about them. They never let anything stand in their way, not even the fact that more than three-fourths of our school population is considered below the poverty level. They are so determined to prosper and grow.
Their little brains are like little sponges that soak up anything and everything I can throw their way.
The more I throw the more they long for. It's amazing that their little heads can hold so much information yet yearn for more.
My Project
With these Lego sets I hope to give my students more opportunities to explore through STEAM inspired activities. So many times our activities are broken down and classified as science, social studies, math, or reading. I don't want my students to think that each of these subjects stand alone. I want them to understand that each of these subjects can and should be intertwined together to create a deeper meaning. And, there is no better time to get students used to that than in kindergarten.
I want to give my students more opportunities to be hands-on with their learning, but in order to do that I need to appropriate materials.
One of those materials, are Legos. Any kid know that Lego equals building, but I want to erase that notion from their head. Legos aren't just for building. Legos can represent so much more. They can be used to build, of course, but, they can also be use to compare, measure, graph, create. The possibilities with Legos are endless.
One of the first things I would love to do when we get our Lego materials is to create a graph based on favorite colors to introduce, not only graphing, but coding. I would also love for them to be able to take these blocks and make a representation of our little community and the people within it that make it what it is. This is an activity that can be used to span over the course of a week or two...taking a tour of our community to get picture of the places and people within our community, learning about our community helpers and their tools/vehicles/where they work, drawing/creating maps and blueprints. Then putting all of this together to help us build our small representation of our community and its members.
