STEAMing With Fun Using Picture Books and Hands on Manipulatives!

My Students

I teach at an elementary school in Hilo, Hawaii. My students represent many different cultures and economic backgrounds. Most of my students are disadvantaged due to economic backgrounds.

I've moved from a 3rd grade classroom to a 2nd grade classroom this school year.

Our school has been using a state mandated reading and math curriculum. Many of our students are struggling, especially with the reading curriculum. Many of our students have never left the Hawaiian islands; therefore, their personal experiences are very limited. Our students experience difficulty relating to the stories shared in the reading curriculum, because of their limited exposure to different climates and cultures.

Although my students may be facing challenges in their lives, they are always eager to learn new things!

My Project

My second grade students are wanting to do more hands on learning with math and science. Therefore, I would like to offer them STEAM projects throughout the school year. STEAM projects offer meaningful collaboration through team work, encourages critical thinking, exposes young children to the creative process and provides a unique way to problem solve.

These picture books will help inspire their young minds to be creative and the cool manipulatives will give them a fun and unique way of valuing the arts!

I would like to read these picture books to my students to encourage creativity when building their projects. For example, my students can use the magnetic tiles to build a house ("If I Built a House"), the Goobi construction set to build a car ("If I Built a Car"), the straws and connector set to build animals ("Mechanimals"), and the bristle blocks to build an imaginative toy of their choice ("Have Fun, Molly Lou Melon"). I can't wait to see creativity come alive in my classroom! :-)
