This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I work in a Title I school which integrates students with intellectual disabilities with their able bodied peers. About half of our population have special needs. More than 90% of our school qualifies for free lunch. My students are in third, fourth, and fifth grade and are diagnosed with Intellectual Disabilities. They learn in a self-contained class. They have difficulties with speech, self-help, and fine motor skills. We missed almost 2 weeks of school due to Hurricane Irma and are having to restart our year. It has been very upsetting to the students and staff.
I feel I can reset the year and unlock the great potential in my students if I can present them with colorful, high-interest engineering, collage, and art materials that they want to use.
My Project
The students enjoy building imaginative sculptures with Lego construction blocks and are learning to use them as a launch pad for inventive tales. They enjoy using electronics and we will use the requested tablets to research Lego creations. They enjoy using all types of markers, crayons, and collage materials to make their work pop. They lack basic school supplies such as pencils in order to complete their work.
My students with intellectual disabilities are struggling to restart their school year after Hurricane Irma disrupted their lives.
My students engage in active learning using Legos to build scenes which become the basis of class stories. They use our hands-on math materials with gusto, but we need more manipulatives, which we can make from foam sheets. They enjoy using glue, feathers, sequins, and other materials to embellish their ABC books. The students seem to have already used up all their school supplies with no replenishment in sight.
New Lego kits, tablets, school, and art supplies will help my class with disabilities restart their school year by allowing them to learn joyfully by using all their senses.
