My students need supplies for an amazing summer STEAM project! This summer, they're going to be working on creating modern art steady hand games with alligator leads, copper wire, wire cutters, electric tape, and more.
The students in my class deal with learning, behavioral, and/or emotional disabilities while living in a group home and trying to learn. It's impressive what they are able to accomplish in the face of such adversity.
All of my students have special needs.
They have experienced trauma in their lives and struggle with basic needs, let alone regularly attending school. My school serves students with a range of abilities, and the educators work hard to make school both fun and challenging. The student population has a high turnover rate throughout the year, so it is difficult to describe a typical student, but I teach math to students in 6-12 grade. All students receive free lunch. Our technology is severely outdated, so we are resigned to mostly work out of textbooks. We don't even have wifi! There is so much that my students could do if they had the same opportunities as students at nearby public schools. Let's work together to give them a chance to shine!
My Project
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education is an integrated approach to teaching students about real-world applications of the same subjects. The unit that I have designed combines lecture and note taking with related field trips and hands-on exploration and creation.
This summer, my students will learn about circuits, sculpture, center of gravity, and engineering while building their own modern art steady hand games.
Many of my students have expressed an affinity for working with their hands and learning about how things work. This unit will be an exploration into the world of electrical engineering for my middle school and high school students. The materials that you will provide are necessary for the hands-on exploration and creation part of the unit. While I will pay for a few more items myself, your donation will go a long way to ensuring their growth and success in STEAM education.
