This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Art is a universal language. It cuts across racial, cultural, social, educational and economic barriers and enhances cultural appreciation. The study of art also improves student learning in other academic areas. And, it is fun!
My students are enthusiastic artists.
They love to do anything in art from painting and drawing to ceramics and weaving. Many are ELL learners as they have just immigrated to our country. Their parents are eager for their children to succeed in their new home and show a great appreciation for our cultural climate. Many are artistic at home, so the students bring that love of art with them to class.
Our school is a Title One school and does not have funding for the art programs, it is something that the art teachers have to find themselves. Well, they provide some of the basics. That is why I write Donorschoose.org projects to find traditional and modern materials for my students to experience in art class. We do a lot of drawing and ceramics. This is our second year in a small trailer so it is difficult to do easel painting, which we used to love. Our classes are usually 25-30 students, so space is of the essence. We put 110% into our art projects and our art work shows it!
My Project
I am requesting materials that are very basic, like Fiskars Scissors. We use scissors in many cut and paste activities from collages like Romare Bearden and Henri Mattise. Some students in kindergarten or first grade have never used a pair of scissors and have to learn the basic cuts like straight and curved lines. I am also requesting sets of colored bowls. We often need bowls for water, paint, keeping scraps in and even using as molds for our clay projects. I am beginning fused glass with my 5th graders and the muffin pans will be used to keep their glass projects or small ceramic pendants in a safe place until ready to be fired. The muffin pans will also be used in collage and painting, as they are very versatile.
This project is for very basic supplies like scissors, bowls and muffin pans.
An art room can't function without scissors when exact line cuts are needed for a project. The bowls and muffin pans are so versatile and useful for many different types of media and will be important in our daily art. My students are inventive and will certainly put them to uses I haven't mentioned. Please consider donating to our project, because these items will be used daily by my creative art students.
