Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our school is an elementary school that services students from TK to 5th grade. We are located in the middle of a diverse and dense urban community. My 3rd and 4th graders are enrolled in a Spanish Bilingual Program that maintains and enhances their native language while supporting their growth in the English language. We have a 50/50 model in which half of the day is taught in English and the other half in Spanish.

Our school is located in the heart of Los Angeles a few miles form downtown LA where bilingualism is embraced and supported.

We are a Title One school that serves low income families from different cultural backgrounds.

My Project

Science, technology, engineering and math curriculum are important areas that support innovation and creation amongst our students. They can research environmental solutions, create new programming methods, websites and can become the next set of outstanding engineers. Such innovation can also support the creation of solution based projects to combat the many environmental challenges we face today. Students can express such creative solutions through the use of art. The materials being requested would help create prints, smog collectors and wind catchers to visually display social and environmental injustices.

By utilizing the arts to display different environmental and social problems students can then create solutions through the use of science, technology, engineering and math.

The smog collectors would literally collect the airs pollutants over time using the adhesive film. After displaying these smog collectors students would present the many solutions and strategies to combat air contamination. With the scratch pads, ink and brayers students will go through the printmaking process to display both social and environmental movements. Using the acetate sheets students could present the four STEM domains. The wind catchers would rotate constantly displaying innovative solutions. Students can take action through STEAM topics utilizing different Visual Arts forms and mediums.
