My students need 3 Lego LearnToLearn Kits. These kits will allow students to build for our lessons during the year, and take home their Lego kits at the end of the year.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are second graders from a high poverty school. Our students are very inquisitive and love science, math, reading and hands-on and fast-paced projects; however, funds are limited. We are looking to expand their familiarity with robots and coding.
Do you remember the first time you were able to build something and share it with your friends or family?
My students want to build and share. These LEGO LearnToLearn kits and supplies will allow them to build in an educational way, and then write about and film their creations when they are done.
My Project
These LEGO LearnToLearn kits allow the entire Second Grade at my school to explore building while following 15 sets of activities that come with the kits. This will help improve their ability to follow instructions, recipes and other forms of informational text. The students will also be able to come up with their own LEGO creation using the individual LearnToLearn packs that are included in the kit. We will use the kits as well as the additional supplies with our LEGO Story Visualizer software so that the students can publish their creations.
This will help them learn about math, science, technology and language arts as well as public performance, as they film their video by speaking their written product, filming the LEGO, and sharing their video with other 2nd graders.
Publishing this video would be their final project, a performance art piece.
All of the Second Grade students will be able to use their very own kit that has 72 pieces, and at the end of the year they will be able to keep their kit. This gives them ownership over their materials (they are less likely to loose their pieces if they know the belong to them at the end of the year). They can collaborate and use their LEGO creations with another student to tell a truly wonderful story!
