Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are in second and third grade. They come to my classroom for Reading, Language Arts, and Math. They are very enthusiastic learners with diverse needs. These students are eager to learn, but require hands-on learning activities to understand different concepts. My students have varying exceptionalities including Specific Learning Disabilities, Other Health Impairments, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Intellectual Disabilities. Many are also English Language Learners from low socio-economic backgrounds.
My students need someone to believe in them!
I've had the pleasure of working with some of them in the past and they require a positive learning environment that incorporates the use of a growth mindset. School is challenging and they require a classroom that promotes flexibility, creativity, and uniqueness. Activities that incorporate auditory, visual, kinesthetic, and tactile materials have shown to be the most effective for these learners.
My Project
This year I decided to focus on incorporating STEAM activities in our class! STEAM incorporates Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math. They allow children to explore new concepts with hands-on learning materials, make connections between content, and problem solve independently!
Help us incorporate STEAM learning bins into our class activities!
These bins will challenge my students to think outside of the box and create items that are related to what they are learning. Each quarter my students will be given a task. They will plan what materials they will use and draw a design for their models. After they complete all their pencil/paper assignments, students will be given an opportunity to work on the task card and use the items in the STEAM bins to create their model.
My students get really excited for new activities and learning materials. Let's make learning fun for them! Let's motivate them to be their true self and create something awesome out of our class' STEAM materials!
