My students are a creative, enthusiastic and diverse group of second graders. One thing they have in common is that they are particularly interested in science, engineering and technology. Our school has a STEM focus; Project based learning emphasizing collaboration, problem solving and critical thinking is a core element of instruction. Students are accustomed to working in pairs or small groups on projects that integrate math, science and language arts. They love to work together and are inspired by new challenges.
My Project
This introductory 3D Doodlers kit will enhance our current STEM instruction and enable my students to have a hands-on experience with 3D printing. All my students have some familiarity with 3D printers because our school has one, but they have not have the chance to work with the printer on their own. The 3D Doodlers kit provides 12 pens so students can work in pairs on projects. The kit also provides instructions for initial activities that encourage innovation and critical thinking.
The 3D Doodlers will let each child experiment with this medium, gain first hand understanding of the process and integrate this technology with concepts we are already working with.
With the help of the 3D doodlers students could design and build 3D forms to combine with their LED light circuits, they could create 3D models of the plant and flower parts and they could investigate structures that will solve problems with land erosion due to water and wind. The 3D Doodlers kit will be an engaging way to enhance our current STEM instruction.
