Steam in Industrial America

Help me give my students a model steam engine, to demonstrate how steam power works firsthand, aiding in discussion of the Industrial Revolution, the shift from horse/manpower to steam, and it's various applications (from transportation to reducing labor.

My Students

As an inner-city charter school, we get a unique mix of students who are either eager for an academic challenge, or else seeking a place of acceptance. However, regardless of their reason for joining us, they all show the same wonder at the world around them, and a shared question of "why". Examples of this include "why did soldiers fight in a line during the American Revolution?" or "how does steam-power work?" or "how is steel made?".

A majority of my students have passed the jadedness that one sees in high school and are not afraid to ask the questions they are curious about!

My Project

History is often taught through books and primary sources. Rarely is it treated as a hands-on course. However, most people enjoy hands-on experiences in history (museums, re-enactments, etc). By adding this model steam engine to my classroom, I will be able to take what has often been left as an online video or crude drawing and show this wonderful technology first-hand.

The steam engine is a crucial component in the history of American Industry.

Its principles apply to modern combustiopn engines. However, many individuals (students and adults alike) do not understand the mechanics of a machine like this, or take it for granted. By being able to demonstrate how this machine functions, I will be able to provide a hands-on experience for my students as well as cross my content into STEM territory.
