STEAM & Creative Play in the Library

Help me give my students materials for creative play and STEAM projects that will be used in the library. In our class we read a variety of stories and create projects that correlate to the story.

My Project

Our school is a K-5 building just north of the city of Chicago. I am a school librarian and our students visit the library once a week. In my class, throughout our school year, students are exposed to a variety of literature that celebrates different genres, perspectives, and experiences. We use the stories we read to learn from one another but also to see ourselves represented. We often will create projects that correspond to our reading.

Having markers, paper, and other art supplies allow us to use our creativity and express ourselves and relate to our reading.

I would like to have a bench that would store materials easily for student accessibility and management of said materials. Using manipulatives such as blocks and LEGO kits allow students to explore areas of math, science and engineering, work in collaboration, and respond to literature in a creative way. We can use art supplies and manipulatives to engage students visually and physically in their understanding. I would like to also provide opportunities for students to work both independently and in collaborative groups in creative play. The possibilities are endless when supplied with varieties of materials.
