Steam: Combining Art, Technology, Math with an iPad
My students need an iPad Pro and Pencil to create large digital art and learn math concepts at the same time when creating digital tessellations and symmetrical pattern art.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students get their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day. The school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students and they get to the school early to eat their breakfast that they don’t get at home.
These students are 11-14 year old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.
My classes are all year so I can work with these students in depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.
They are in uniform and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small and don't really look clean. The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn. Some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.
My Project
We need an iPad Pro and Pencil to create large digital art and learn math concepts at the same time when creating digital tessellations and symmetrical pattern art. Digital art combines students' love of technology/iPads/their phones and their personal drawings they do every day in their sketchbooks. Having an iPad Pro and pencil for more students to be able to explore the potential of drawing on a larger screen with the precise Apple pencil is a win-win situation for students to learn technology, create art and "learn and visually use math concepts" in their artwork.
Combing art and technology and math concepts benefits, enhances the three subjects as students become immersed using the iPads to create art while learning about tessellations, reflections, shapes and patterns.
The iPad Pro and Apple Pencil are an awesome combination, easy to learn and students feel successful with the resulting digital drawing they can now produce with this new technology. Now with the Apple Pencil and IPad Pro they can draw freely what they are feeling and want to express. Students are engaged, challenged and ultimately successful with this new technology.
They have learned how to use a new technology and with this new technology they can explore math and art in depth. They are proud of themselves for what they have learned how to do and the results will add a new media as well to their art portfolio. Only at school do they get this chance to use the iPad Pro and Pencil and more students now can try as we get more funded through Donors Choose.
