Our rural elementary STEAM students in grades K-5 love visiting our STEAM class every week for 60 minutes. It is the perfect space for hands-on learning that integrates science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.
We start our class reconnecting with one another, learning about the day's challenge/activity and expectations, and participating in a conversation that aims to inspire teams.
Traditionally, once students have learned about the day's challenge, they form teams and start brainstorming solutions. Using materials available in our room they work through the Engineering Design Process to work out their solution. However, this year we will physically distance when working.
My Project
Classroom basics in an Elementary STEAM room include a variety of tools that help students to make holes, cut, glue, and measure. Students also utilize markers, pens, and pencils.
This year we are finding that it is difficult to provide enough classroom basics (materials) for our physically distanced students who are at school, and for those who are remote learning.
We use a variety of materials in STEAM when engineering solutions to our team challenges. Students work collaboratively to solve real-world problems. The requested glue gun sticks, markers, and cardboard cutters will be utilized by students as they work. The markers help to create signage, menus, brochures and other supporting documents that help to communicate the group's progress and message to their audience. The glue gun sticks, canary cutters, scissors, and cut-free gloves, assist students as they prototype.
