Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I have 19 students. My students come from diverse backgrounds. Being a public school in rural New Mexico, we are blessed to have many cultures and backgrounds within our classroom. We have students who are living in poverty. We have students with special needs. Our school is in the middle of a small town, so we have a mix of middle-class working families and those struggling to make ends meet. We are a Title I school. We have about 600 students in our school.
My goal is always to create a classroom community, or as I like to call it, a family.
Kindergarten is all about exploring and getting along and that is our goal for the year! My students are kind and creative and love all of the opportunities that Donorschoose.org has given to us!
My Project
Last year, instead of doing reading buddies with our 4th grade friends, we began to do STEAM Buddies. Each week we meet and work on a collaborative project. The teams usually consist of 1 kindergarten student and 1-2 4th grade students. The cost of materials got very expensive and usually students were not able to complete or we ran out of materials in the traditional Makers Space. I noticed that when we had STEAM toys and kits, students got more benefit out of their STEAM Buddy time. My dream then became to create a permanent Makers Space with various items that groups could choose and rotate through each time we met.
Kindergarten and 4th grade STEAM buddies will choose to work at stations that include an animation camera, Doodler Pens, Lego Kits, Circuit Kits, Robots and Osmo Coding Kits.
This setup will give the groups a choice in how they want to spend their time as well as create a cost effective environment for the teachers. I got this idea from Ms. Capwell's project in that she combined a Makers Space with items like a 3D Printer and STEAM Kits that can be used over and over again.
