My Students
I teach third-grade math and science at a Pre-K through 5th-grade school in North Miami Beach. Most of my students are high-poverty and have limited technology at home.
After Hurricane Irma, the financial situation for most of our students became even worse and they are still facing the challenges of coming to school with basic supplies, and now we have started welcoming students displaced by Hurricane Maria, so the challenges are real.
Most students do not even have computer access at home.
My students are always excited to use technology in the classroom and when we do center activities, they rush for the computers to explore online math and science resources. For most of our students, Internet access and the use of computers are a luxury that they do not have at home.
My Project
My students need a KNEX Education STEAM kit and two Math and Geometry kits, so they can learn how to build using math and science concepts.
We strongly believe that all children will learn if given the right tools and technology.
As their third-grade math and science teacher, my main objective is to enhance and improve their young learning experiences, especially when it pertains to their learning environment. The KNEX Kits will teach students how to build structures they see every day on their way to school and back. They will also learn key geometrical concepts, which is very important at this grade level.
I will use math and science concepts to show them how STEAM relates to real life problem solving. Math especially, would no longer be abstract as they will see the value in learning for example, proportions as it relates to constructing a scale or crane.
The HP Chromebook is needed as we currently have four Chromebooks, and our center groups are usually five or more students per group.
More than half of students from low‑income households
