My Project

Going into my third year of teaching has got me inspired to do more for my students. These last few years have stifled opportunities for hands-on and/or collaborative learning opportunities in my classroom. The need for more hands-on experiences in science is a challenge I am willing to take on to continue developing my own skill set, despite my relative inexperience with it.

Rube Goldberg machines and prototyping can be enhanced with the precision of a Cricut Cutting Machine on many types of materials.

Few students are able to or motivated to bring in materials for their projects. While Goldberg machines were built with classroom objects and recycled cardboard and paper last year, this year, new materials like wood and fabric can open up new possibilities. Goals for past projects like filling a dog’s food bowl or starting a video to “RickRoll” the class are met by incorporating Newton’s three laws of motion in a chain reaction. Possibilities with prototyping are endless given the creative opportunities to incorporate art into science-related prototypes and models. My particular students aspire to work in business and education where presentation of a product is an invaluable skill that can be practiced through using the Cricut.

Sustainability is an instructional unit covered in my class. Therefore, in the spirit of embodying the core concept of sustainability, I will continue to have students use the Cricut with materials such as cardboard and paper that have already been used and would otherwise be thrown out. Imagine how different their projects will be when they don’t have to cut intricate cardboard parts with inefficient classroom scissors! I hope that this tool can bring value to materials once seen as waste. The main focus, though, is that students will learn new skills, be inspired, and take pride in their work!
