My students need a puppet theater, puppets, and building manipulatives in order to develop their performing arts and engineering skills.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I love my class; whether I am clear-eyed or bleary-eyed, energetic, or exhausted - I am always happy to see my students. They mean the world to me, and deserve so much more than I can give them on my own. Thank you so much for considering making a donation to my project.
My Kindergarteners are full of curiosity, joy, and boundless energy.
Ours is an inner-city school, classified as Title I, and more than half of our students are classified as English Learners. But they are more than just their language designation, or their income levels, they are students with high potential, and an earnest desire to learn about the world around them. With your generous help, we can all ensure that these students have access to the tools they need to grow their minds and abilities.
My Project
Our school aims to place a particular emphasis on the arts and sciences, to provide STEM and arts opportunities to a historically underserved population. These materials will help me make the performing arts and engineering come to life. I would like to use the puppet theater, and building block manipulatives to create fairytale case studies that develop students' comprehension and production of plays and informational texts.
They'll use the materials to explore problems deeply and take on the role of engineers as they save familiar characters from terrible fates.
Just as law students study classic fairytales in order to find judicial solutions to classic children's stories, my Kindergarteners will use the puppets and manipulatives to find engineering solutions to Grimm problems.
They'll use the puppets to develop their language, comprehension, and social skills as they perform dramatic read alouds of the fairytales. Using the Next Generation Science Standards Engineering guidelines for K-2 and the building materials, we'll perform close readings of the texts, identify the problems, and develop new or improved tools to help Rapunzel from her tower, piglets build homes, gingerbread men cross rivers safely, and red hens bake bread efficiently. They'll then be able to write how to manuals, and become playwrights and actors as they perform their retelling of the classics for parents and classmates. Thank you for considering donating to this project that aims to put the Arts* in STEM.
