This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students get their breakfast at school each morning before they come to my class. Fuel in their bodies makes them ready to learn and start the day. The school serves free breakfast for 85% of the students and they get to the school early to eat their breakfast that they don’t get at home.
These students are 11-14 year old boys and girls, growing, trying, experiencing, experimenting, challenging and ultimately becoming educated in my classroom.
My classes are all year so I can work with these students in depth with technology, get to know their strengths and weaknesses, and see their creativity develop as their experience with art increases.
They are in uniform and some kids have uniforms that fit and are clean and others have uniforms that are too big, too small and don't really look clean. The majority of kids are happy and energetic and ready to learn. Some students have trouble staying awake and staying focused.
My Project
Students love using the computer in the art room, and we have 15 PCs. They also love drawing in their sketchbooks every day for warm ups. Some students take their sketchbooks home every day to draw in them. Combining drawing and drawing on the computer you need a drawing tablet. Professional commercial artists use drawing tablets and students will be working as professional artists with these beginning drawing tablets. We have drawing tablets but 3 of them barely work and need to be replaced.
Developing the skill of digitally drawing with drawing tablets, researching plants on the internet then drawing them correctly, learning about plant morphology at the same time is learning about art and science and technology is STEAM in action.
Students who love drawing will learn about the world around them and develop their creativity. They will be using the drawing tablets for botanical illustrations.
Using the drawing tablets takes a while to get used to, and then they become as necessary as pencils. They will become a much-needed tool for drawing on the computers once students learn how to use them.
