This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are second graders from a high poverty school. Our students are very inquisitive and love science, math, reading and hands-on and fast-paced projects; however, funds are limited. We want to encourage our students to become better readers, while allow them to do STEAM activities.

I want to encourage a love of reading in my students, by having them create a charm about their book series that they will add to their very own necklace.

Students will have a necklace that they will be able to add to throughout the year. They will earn beads for books they finish, and be able to create their own charms after finishing a series, or reading 5 books in a series. This project will encourage them to read, by reading about characters they have become familiar with (really helpful for English Language Learning students), and because they will want to add to their charm necklace.

My Project

We are having the second graders at my school try something new this year. Students are creating their own charm necklaces. For every book students read they will be given a bead that they will add to their necklace. For the 5th book, or for finishing a series of books, they will get to create their own clay charm to add to the necklace. I am requesting clay supplies, beads, tools and books that will help the students create their own charms, beads and necklaces for them to start with, and some Judy Moody and Friends series reader books.

Students will be more motivated to read so that they can create their own charm from clay that they will get to add to their necklace.

By using series readers, like Judy Moody and Friends, will help to engage students because they will have an investment in a character. Reading a series also helps to build vocabulary and engage English Language Learners as well. Students will be tracking their pages read, and books read to incorporate Math, their necklaces will be a graphic representation of their reading progress. They will be creating and working with the Engineering Design Process to create their clay charm. And, of course they will get to be creative as they come up with their very own charm to add.
