STE 'M' is for Math - Kindergarten Style

My students need a complete set of math centers, manipulatives such as Magna-Tiles and activities to help sharpen math skills. A teaching cart and 30 Chairback Buddies are needed for instruction and storage of math materials.

My Students

My students learn best and enjoy math when working hands-on with manipulatives. Equipping my students with engaging math manipulatives and providing them with accessible storage will delight their senses and further their learning. A dream fulfilled - -fostering a love for math in my young students!

My school is a Title 1, STEM school.

We serve a diverse population of students and families in southeast Seattle. I currently have 21 students; 40% are EL, 10 boy and 11 girls. My students are fearless! Each student exudes a genuine interest in learning. Many have stated math is their favorite subject. Our math block is lively! My students enjoy playing games, physically acting out concepts, regularly discussing their ideas and strategies. My school recognizes math's foundational importance to all elements of STEM and supports student learning by working collaboratively to meet each student's needs. My students are supported by intervention support, grade level teamwork, sharing of resources, and commitment to professional development.

My Project

My students need a complete set of math centers, manipulatives such as Magna-Tiles, magnetic numbers, and place value blocks, and activities to help sharpen math skills. A teaching cart and 30 Chairback Buddies are needed for instruction and storage of math materials. My students are sharpening their math skills: counting (by 2s, 5s and 10), base 10 (decomposition by 10s and 1s) and addition and subtraction. The Store and Display Teaching Cart I’ve requested contains 8 bins, which will house manipulatives and centers needed. The Cart will anchor our math center allowing me to model/display on its magnetic white board, e.g. using the Magnetic Place Value Blocks or Magnetic Numbers and Counters. My students will be able to quickly and easily access the materials needed to immediately work, hands on. The center sets I’ve requested provide a complete array of activities that support independent and small group learning and foster student dialogue: sorting, patterning, graphing, shapes, counting, estimation, measurement and simple addition, subtraction and base 10 and decomposition. I've requested 30 chair buddies for my students, to help them store and easily access their math workbooks,100 charts, counters, and other materials we use during math.

My students are maturing and their academic progress is at an incredible rate.

They are becoming "thinkers", exhibiting independence and ownership for their own learning. My goal is to provide them with materials and a classroom environment that stimulates learning, empowerment and a desire to return again and again. Additionally, I want them each to develop an affinity for math. I am grateful for your generous donations and support of my students. Thank you for investing in their futures.
