My Students
Each of my high school special education students is unique and learns in their own way! Some are visual learners, some are auditory learners, and some learn kinesthetically. Most prefer hands on activities. Their ways of responding to lessons vary greatly as well. Some prefer writing responses on paper, some prefer using the computer, and others prefer to respond orally. The way they prefer to spend their time in class learning their lessons and completing their assignments varies greatly as well. Some like to stand, some like to sit in a traditional desk & chair, others like to be able to move in wheeled chairs, while others like to sit on bouncy seats.
School has not always been easy for my students.
Many of my students have experienced trauma and it impacts their educational performance, classroom behavior and leads to absences. My students need a comfortable and inviting environment in order to feel excitement to come to school each day.
My Project
Flexible seating allows my students to feel comfortable while learning. Often while doing independent work, students choose to use my teacher's chair and a clipboard so they can have some movement while working. Other students choose to stand at their desks so they can fidget while working. Regardless of how they choose to sit, I have observed that they are more focused and more productive when given the choice of seating.
In my class, flexible seating leads to greater engagement in the learning process.
The furniture I'm requesting will provide my students with additional seating choices that will allow for movement and fidgeting. Additional seating might also allow me to get my chair back from my students!
