This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are AMAZING fourth graders, who deserve the very best! They are fun, energetic and creative, and I love to showcase their spectacular talents. The school where I teach is considered "high poverty," so some students do not have the same opportunities as others. Everyone qualifies for free lunch in the Title 1 program.
Although my students are not diverse in race and background, they are all creative by nature and very different in the way they learn.
Our urban school is located in a community that supports the arts, STEM, and extracurricular activities. Many students come into school looking forward to simple things like taking a photo, singing a song, or getting a hello from a friend. For some of them, this interaction is the only positive part of their day.
My Project
Weather and air quality are constant roadblocks in our mission to stay active in the outdoors. Students are locked in because of extreme heat, torrential rain, and constant smog. My students brainstormed ideas regarding indoor fitness for at least 60 minutes per day and unanimously agreed that GONOODLE.COM is a great solution.
This is one kid inspired idea that benefits everyone because this exercise website gets every student, at every fitness level, up out of their seats to move, move, move!
There are tons of free videos on the site that teach dance, encourage high energy movement, and focus on stability, balance, and core strength. My students say that GoNoodle.com videos are fun and that means more participation. All of this is accomplished while also integrating academic knowledge of science, math, health, and geography.
Now all they need is a television with a Roku streaming stick to enable us to wirelessly access the GoNoodle.com site and broadcast the exercise videos for the whole class. The scarves, batons, and rubber balls keep our hands constantly busy and moving so we can break a sweat to the beat of the GoNoodle music videos. My students are also requesting resistance bands to stretch everyday. This will keep them warmed up, safe from injury, and ready to move when all that GoNoodle fun erupts.
Thank you TARGET for this opportunity. My students are very grateful. Rainy, hot, smoggy days may no longer be a roadblock to our physical education fun. We will be ready!
