We have over 150 students in the band and orchestra ensembles. Our students not only perform at various events within the school, but they also volunteer their time to play at outreach concerts, state ensembles, festivals and anywhere else the opportunity is presented. Within minutes of putting an event performance opportunity, such as needing music in the hallways of our annual art show, I have all of the volunteering spots filled. In other words, my students are caring, invested and creative individuals who use music to make our school (and the world) a better place.
My Project
Studying instrumental music is rewarding. Students not only get to learn an instrument of their choice, express themselves through music but they also learn about teamwork, organization, effective practice methods, history, science, math, communication skills... the list is endless! These skills help them musically, in their general classroom and in their life!
Unfortunately, as rewarding as it is to study an instrument - it also can be an expensive process!
Our district works to make sure every student, regardless of financial situation, is able to play the instrument of their choice. We have implemented scholarship funds, fundraised for new instruments, applied and won instrument grants and launched a town-wide instrument donation drive all to get instruments in the hands of every single student.
Getting an instrument for each student, whether it is district provided or parent provided is half the battle. Instruments need supplies such as reeds, strings, shoulder rests, rosin and that can get costly too! This DonorsChoose.org project will help bulk up the supply inventory in my classroom so I can continue to meet the needs of my students.
