I am a Special Education teacher in the Baltimore City public school system. As the intermediate Special Educator, the grades I teach range from 3-5. Over the past 2 years our school's special education population has increased. As students in a Special Education classroom, my students face so many challenges and struggles. I like to meet children where they are, and most of my students are visual and auditory learners.
I want to give my students a tool to help them increase their reading abilities. It seems in today's busy society reading at home is decreasing and the kids don't hear other people reading. This will give them an opportunity to listen to themselves read and hear their own voice.
The whisperphone is a device that allows a student to read a book and they will be able to hear their own voice. This will help them to learn a variety of things from phonemic awareness to fluency. Most of my students are at least 2 grade levels behind when they are enrolled in my class. When they can hear themselves read they are able to hear sounds and words and begin to increase their reading speed. It also helps them put more expression in their voices. Plus, it is fun to hear your own voice reading.
Your help will ensure that my students will be academically successful and become better readers and we know that readers are leaders.
