My classroom has 22 wonderfully diverse students who come to school each day eager to learn. Some students find it difficult to stay engaged. They fidget and are unable to focus. My sweet students have asked for more exercise breaks and alternative seating so they can wiggle while they work! They have seen this seating and say "yes, please"!
Research shows that Flexible seating produces increased attention, decreased levels of hyperactivity, and increased time on task.
Our school is a Title I school with the majority of the students qualifying for free lunches due to high poverty levels.
Many parents work more than one job and do not have the means, the language knowledge, or the educational ability to support students' learning at home. Our school is filled with caring educators that nurture all of these beautiful children in ways that extend beyond the classroom. Providing a meal, personal grooming products, clothing, and other student needs to keep our families healthy is a common occurrence. Educational support is also provided by our caring teaching staff - we send books home with children, tutor children during our off hours, and even babysit siblings when needed.
My Project
Moving and learning - what a perfect combination to grow the body and mind in healthy ways.
Students will also get to sit on wobble stools during our Science stations.
The station with the wobble stools will feature a weekly unit on growing the body and mind through healthy eating, good nutrition, and an exercise program. Student will record their take always from the lessons in their Science Journals. This will be a true favorite station with the students as the learn about health and nutrition and exercise on the wobble stools at the same time!
The special needs students in my classroom that may not be able to handle a traditional stability ball can experience these lessons with the help of the stability ball seat. The security of the back and the legs will allow them to participate with the other students without the risks of using wobble seating that could tip over.
Students will get to experience and learn that you can stay active, get fit, and use research based seating to be a more successful learner. They want this seating, they will use it, and essential exercise at least 5 hours a day! The students will also learn to make healthy, positive lifestyle changes while having fun and increasing their learning - sounds like a win for the body and mind!
