Help me give my students the focus skills they need to build to work independently. Using privacy boards, and storing them in a proper place, will support all learning in our room, and will keep kids focused!
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My co-teacher and I at our school have an energetic bunch of 9- and 10-year-olds in our room. Our students are fun to be with and are learning how to be good citizens in our classroom, our school, and our community. The majority of our students are from families that struggle to live at or below the poverty line. Resources are often stretched thin for our families, and the children they care about. Impulse control, tolerance levels, and problem-solving skills are affected by pressures that come with a childhood where the effects of poverty can be overwhelming.
Focus is a big challenge in a busy classroom with multiple groups learning tasks in different ways.
Last year, my co-teacher and I noticed that children's attention was often pulled away from independent work tasks by visual distractions across the room, like a child asking a question, or an instructional small group's discussion.
My Project
A student must plan to focus; a teacher can help by creating an environment where focus is achievable. Imagine learning a new skill, and being asked to apply it with focus and intent. Let's say you just learned how to multiply fractions, and you're working on some practice tasks. But, wait! What is your teacher saying to that group over by the rug? Your friends are so interested in what she's saying, it must be important! Well, YOU are distracted. If you had a privacy board, you could focus on your task, without distraction, and you'd succeed with your new skills by putting them to use with repeated practice. You would be creating muscle memory in your brain with no distractions around you. You would be successful in applying new learning, because your privacy board allowed you to do your best!
