This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Today, about 1 in 3 American kids and teens is overweight or obese, nearly triple the rate in 1963... Childhood obesity is now the No. 1 health concern among parents in the U.S., topping drug abuse and smoking," according to the American Heart Association. Simply put, our kids need to keep PLAYING!
Just like all other kids, my students LOVE learning (when we teachers make it worthwhile)!
They work everyday in collaborative groups, sharing amazing strategies and ideas that even adults can't come up with. Our school, whose mission includes bilingualism and social justice, is located in an urban neighborhood. We are a new pilot school within the school district, allowing us certain autonomies, which allow us to design creative, yet rigorous, curriculum. Historically, most families chose to bus their children about one hour outside of their community in search of better schools. However, ever since the opening of our site, we have been able to celebrate a "homecoming" of sorts, providing families with a quality school that their community deserves.
My Project
During the elementary years, kids seem to play blindly with one another and laugh and run around. They are genuine and carefree kids. Then, suddenly something changes in middle school and the playing stops. Add to that the budget cuts, which means schools have just enough money to buy instructional materials, but recreational materials get the ax.
If my students were to get a variety of new sports and play equipment, they would be excited to take the materials out to put to use. They are really only used to handballs and soccer balls. However, introduce to them new sports like football, racquetball, tetherball (our school has tetherball poles but no tetherballs), and our students would be eager to get out and play!
With new play equipment and their continued instruction of health skills through the Health course that I teach, I believe we can be part of the fight against obesity in America's youth.
Our students need to realize that playing is not only fun, but also a healthy activity to engage in. Please help our youth to stay active and fit by funding our project!
