Staying Cool to Stay Engaged in School

My Project

I am the certified school nurse at a PreK–12 Public Therapeutic Day School that serves students with significant emotional, behavioral, and mental health needs. Our specialized program integrates therapeutic services with academic instruction to support individual student growth in a safe and structured environment. All of our students have Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) and receive behavioral support, and 47% qualify for free or reduced-rate meals.

As the weather warms up, many students come to school without weather-appropriate clothing or water bottles to stay hydrated.

This often means wearing long sleeves or heavy pants on hot days, leading to discomfort, overheating, and difficulty concentrating in class. Our students deserve to feel physically at ease so they can focus on what matters most: their learning, emotional regulation, and connection with others.

This project will provide breathable shorts, short-sleeved T-shirts, and reusable water bottles for students who need them. These simple items have a meaningful impact. When students feel good in their clothes and stay cool and hydrated, they're better able to engage in learning, build confidence, and make positive peer connections.

Clean, comfortable clothing also reduces anxiety and supports a sense of belonging—crucial for students navigating emotional and behavioral challenges. As part of our Life Skills programming, students will use the school's washer and dryer to care for and maintain their donated clothing, reinforcing hygiene, self-care, and personal responsibility.
