My students need a webcam and USB conference microphone.
FULLY FUNDED! Mr. Nelson's classroom raised $267
This project is fully funded
For every one day that a student has to stay home from school, several days are required to get back on track. If two or more days are missed, the student could easily become completely overwhelmed. Other students always feel they are behind just because they do not grasp concepts as quickly as their peers. I am a physics instructor for the eleventh and twelfth grade students of our school. Our school is dedicated to finding innovative ways to improve student achievement and to help prepare our students for the demands that will be placed on them in the professional world of the 21st century. This necessitates changing our teaching style and incorporating current technology.
The hope of this grant is to make it possible to have a live webcast available on a daily basis and then post the recorded presentations on my website so that they are available to improve the achievements of the students. For example, one of my students is attending a week long leadership conference while another student recently had surgery and is unable to attend school for an entire week. Both circumstances are legitimate reasons to miss school, but both students are concerned with how far behind they will become in their studies. Furthermore, there are other students that need more instruction time to really comprehend the material. Now imagine the student that recently had surgery logging on to the computer and participating in a live web conference of her classes. She is able to watch the demonstrations and the presentations as well as communicate with the students and instructor. The other students are able to log on to the computer at a later time and watch a recording of the webcast and review the same presentation as their peers. These scenarios could easily become a reality with the technology available today.
The software to make this project a reality is available on the internet. However, the hardware to make it successful is not as readily available. In order to make this a reality in our classroom we need a webcam and USB conference microphone. The webcam would enable the students at home to see the events that are taking place in the classroom and make it so they are actually a part of the class. The conference microphone would enable the students at home to not only hear what the instructor says but also the questions and discussions of the other students. These elements of the classroom are an invaluable part of the educational process. Additionally, when the students return to class they are not behind in their work or their understanding of the material.
Sometimes hearing the material one more time is all it takes for a student to really grasp the concepts. Knowing that a student can easily obtain the missed material may help an ill student be at ease when they are unable to attend school. Your donations will enable students to connect with their instructors and peers when circumstances would not usually allow, thus resulting in higher achievements.
