Who would've thought - kids want to read books in math class!
The students in my Statistics classes are fascinated by the fact that what they are learning about is everywhere.
I am trying to expand my classroom library of extra reading outside the curriculum. We need a library of books to read about Statistics. Our titles include Modern Romance, Bringing Down the House, Moneyball and many more. These books are not math textbooks but look at ways that statistics is used in a variety of areas. Books such as Bringing Down the House which is the story of a group of MIT students who learn how to count cards in Las Vegas and Modern Romance, which looks at how dating and marriage has changed since our grandparents generation written by comedian Aziz Ansari.
There are so many different ways people use statistics and my students enjoy doing extra reading on the topic.
My Statistics students are in grades 10-12. They are a diverse group but they are all interested in this very different branch of mathematics. Statistics is the class that lights a fire under the students. For many, it is the first time they see the real life applications of math.
Our high school is a five-year comprehensive high school of about 2000 students in grades 8-12 and is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
32% of the students are identified as low-income, 11% have a first language other than English, and 12% are identified as special education. Our high school serves seven different villages in our community.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
