Statistics in Literature! Please Help Us Build a Library
My students need a library of books to read about Statistics. Our titles include The Black Swan, Beyond Numeracy, Freakonomics, and many more. These books are not math textbooks but look at ways that statistics is used in a variety of areas.
My AP Statistics students are in grades 10-12. They are a diverse group but they are all interested in this very different branch of mathematics. Statistics is the class that lights a fire under the students. For many, it is the first time they see the real life applications of math.
Our high school is a five-year comprehensive high school of about 2000 students in grades 8-12 and is accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.
32% of the students are identified as low-income, 11% have a first language other than English, and 12% are identified as special education. Our high school serves seven different villages in our community.
My Project
Who would've thought - kids want to read books in math class!
The students in my AP Statistics class are fascinated by the fact that what they are learning about is everywhere.
I am trying to build a classroom library of extra reading outside the curriculum. We need a library of books to read about Statistics. Our titles include The Black Swan, Beyond Numeracy, Freakonomics, and many more. These books are not math textbooks but look at ways that statistics is used in a variety of areas. Books such as Freakonomics, which looks at the correlation between things you wouldn't think of, such as the reduction in crime rates 20 years after Roe v. Wade, and Moneyball, which follows Billy Beane, the GM of the Oakland A's and how he used statistics to build a stronger team.
There are so many different ways people use statistics and my students enjoy doing extra reading on the topic.
