My Students

Students are sitting on the edge of their chairs awaiting what will happen next in the book talk. "Mrs. R! You just got us all excited about this book, and you only have ONE copy?" I've built the excitement, but now my students may have to possibly wait months before they can read that book.

I am a librarian in a school where many of my students come from single-parent families whose parent is working more than one job just to provide the necessities of life.

Most of my students live below the poverty line where anything beyond the necessities cannot be purchased. Reading is an avenue for my students to escape the hardship of their daily lives and begin an adventure beyond their imagination. The only way many of my students have access to books is through the school library, as they also lack transportation to get to the public library.

My Project

Unfortunately the library budget does not allow for more than one copy of each of the South Dakota Prairie Pasque nominated books. These books are the top 16 books selected by South Dakota librarians and teachers to promote the love of reading in a variety of genres. The program encourages each student to read at least five of the 16 books nominated for the Prairie Pasque award in order to be eligible to vote for the state-wide winner. I don't want my students to miss out on that opportunity just because the library cannot provide them with the books that they are so excited to read. Because these books are longer chapter books, it can take up to a month for some students to finish reading the book. With over 200 students in third through fifth grade, there just isn't enough time to get the books circulated by the deadline for voting in April.

I can guarantee my students are excited to read these books.

I can't keep them on the shelf, and during each class period I have at least three students asking for one of the requested titles. I hate seeing the disappointment on their face when I tell them they'll have to wait until it gets to their name on the waiting list. YOU can make it possible for my students to read these books!
