Starving Artists: Food For Body and Soul

My Project

“Do you have an anything to eat?” If I had a quarter for every time I was asked that every day, I would have plenty of money for snacks for all of my students. I teach art to a fantastic array of middle and high school students and I love teaching art more than most things. But to do that successfully and connect with my students, I need them to be present both physically and mentally. And in order for them to be completely present, they need to be fed. I teach teens, who are constantly hungry, due to the fact that a) they’re teens and b) sometimes they just don’t have food available to them.

Providing something for them to eat, no matter how small, makes a big difference in their morning when they miss breakfast or at 2:00 p.m when lunch is far behind and there’s still 2 hours of school left.

The vending machines sell a wide variety of spicy chips and candy, and this is what they turn to when they’re hungry. They truly crave healthier options; I’ve never seen people so excited about “the GOOD fruit snacks,” trail mix and pretzels. They are more energized and engaged to make art when they're fed. Food is also comforting and that makes my students feel seen and cared for.

We are a Title I school, and in our art classes, every student receives an equal and equitable arts education with access to an amazing variety of supplies and opportunities to explore and grow their creative thinking skills. Our studio classroom is a welcoming and safe space for all students, and to be able to be fed and make art in close community is not only feeding the body but also the mind and the soul.
