My Students

My school is located in a high poverty urban area in the second largest city in the state of Maine. I am the Art Teacher and I am blessed to be working with each and every student! Many of my children have very diverse backgrounds, speak many languages and have special needs. Our entire school is on a free breakfast and lunch plan along with snacks such as fruits or vegetables each day. The reality for most of our students is that school might be the only stable and engaging environment in their lives. It is our job to keep these students engaged, excited and motivated! The one thing that each one of our wonderfully diverse students posses is the ability and drive to learn. I would like to continue this positive motivation and help inspire them in the Art Room.

My Project

These items will enrich our art classroom by providing some of the basic essentials needed! We have paint, which was ordered with our budget, but there are things we need to allow a more independent experience, that we could not afford. The paint cups with large brushes will enforce the ability to be independent in my classroom by filling the paint cups making sure they are full and organized by color. Large paint brushes can be so beneficial for kindergarten - third grade for large brush strokes and ability to fill the paper quickly with paint. Our schools multiple disability population is high and laminating pouches will help ensure their need for visual/picture words “first then” or “expectation chart/schedule” will help maintain a positive and safe environment for my students while they are in my art class. Understanding their need for picture words is the first step. Creating a system that allows for communication between student and teacher comes next. I would like to fulfill the need in my classroom and allow my students the voice and communication they deserve!
