Year after year I wonder at the beginning of the year if I will get any supplies on the first day of school. Unfortunately the number of supplies that are coming in are less and less. Supplies are coming from the dollar store and break or do not work. Parents have more kids to buy for and less money to spend.
Teaching kindergarteners is very exciting because for many this is their first exposure to any type of schooling.
They are excited about learning and sad about not hanging out with parents and playing much of the day. I teach at a school that is over 80% free and reduced price lunch. This means that families and doing whatever they can to meet the needs of their kids, but are still struggling. It is a very diverse school with many cultures and languages spoken.
My Project
This year I am trying to be proactive, we have already heard complaints that supply lists are getting to big and they do not want to buy supplies. I am trying to get the important supplies that we use day in and day out ordered and at the school regardless of how many kids can bring supplies. Pencils, glue sticks, erasers, white board markers and composition notebooks are things that we use almost on a daily basis. This way, I will be able to cut things off the list and for other items we will make it optional if they can afford them. I spend a lot of my own money each year to make up for the students who were unable to afford supplies. I have a family of my own that I need to buy supplies for so I was going to try to see what I am able to do to help kids start the year on the right foot.
If this project gets funded it will help students be prepared and ready for kindergarten without their parents feeling stressed about money.
This will allow our classroom to have quality supplies instead of a mismatch of supplies from the dollar store. Thank you in advance for your donations.
