Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is low income and one hundred percent of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. My students face a lot of challenges that I can't even imagine. However, that doesn't stop them from wanting to learn.
My kinders come to school everyday ready to learn and grow their brains.
For most of them, this is the first school experience and I am their first teacher. This is a huge responsibility as it sets students up for success for the remainder of their school years. They come in the door everyday anxious to learn and full of bright ideas.
My Project
The beginning of kindergarten is a special yet stressful time. Many of my students have never been to school before so everything is new to them. Because they haven't attended school, we spend a large portion of the first quarter focusing on basic academic skills that include letters, numbers and writing names.
The markers and play-doh provide fun, engaging and different ways to practice their names, letters and numbers.
It is much more exciting to practice writing your name using play-doh than an ordinary pencil. Using whiteboard markers allows for lots of practice and easy fixes. Additionally, these tools also help students practice fine motor skills such as rolling out the play-doh to make letters and holding markers to write numbers.
