This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are about to begin kindergarten. I am excited for them because I know how much they will learn in one short year. However, we will need some supplies to help us get organized and start school on the "write" foot.

I am a teacher at a Title I school in Southern California.

One hundred percent of our students are eligible for the free and reduced-price lunch program. Forty percent of the students are English learners. Poverty, gang violence and drugs are prevalent in this inner-city neighborhood. Despite these challenging circumstances or perhaps because of them, my kindergarteners love coming to school and are eager to learn.

My Project

One of the first things my students will need to learn is to keep our materials organized. I am requesting pencil cases, so my kindergarteners can have all the supplies they need readily available whether they are at their desks or moving around during learning centers. The labels will be printed with their names and placed on everything: pencil cases, workbooks, folders. Most of my students will need to learn how to hold a pencil properly; the pencil grips will help encourage proper pencil grasp. We will begin the year with learning to write their names and copying the alphabet, but we will start with the writing process by the second month of school. We will write lists and sentences together, and they will begin to write and illustrate their own sentences. The folders I am requesting will help them keep their lists, drafts, writing checklists, and revised pieces all in one place.
