Starting the Day Successfully: Positive Behavior on the School Bus
Help me give my students hot chips and fidgets to reinforce and reward positive choices on the school bus, as well as a Fire tablet to help meet the needs of our special education population on the bus.
My scholars are a creative and innovative group. My goal is to help them realize their potential by cultivating academic excellence and recognizing their strengths. While there have been many new challenges this school year as we navigate new ways of learning since the COVID-19 pandemic, my scholars are meeting these challenges with resilience, flexibility, and perseverance.
Almost 100% of our scholars arrive to school daily via the school bus.
The ride to school can set the tone for the whole school day ahead; it is important that scholars are POSITIVE, SAFE, and KIND on the school bus ride so that they arrive to school safe, affirmed, and ready to learn.
To help students begin the day ready to learn, I would like to implement a recognition system for my scholars who are POSITIVE, SAFE, and KIND on the school bus during their daily ride to and from school. During this time, scholars will be recognized by the bus drivers or bus aides (who ride along to support specific student needs) and get a certificate that shows they were POSITIVE, SAFE, and KIND. Additionally, they will be able to choose a small prize, such as hot chips, fidget balls, or other small trinkets, to keep along with their certificate. When they arrive to the classroom, we will recognize them whole-class for making POSITIVE, SAFE, and KIND choices on the bus. This will help scholars start their day with positive affirmation and ready to learn, as well as reinforce the kindness we hope to continue in the classroom.
Finally, I would like to provide a Fire tablet for a specific student with special needs to be able to use to help him tolerate the bus ride, communicate his needs, and meet IEP goals in independence and time management.
